1 THQ Poised to sell: UFC & WWE ?? on 1/17/2012, 3:02 am

Source

As a company THQ has been struggling to stay afloat for some time now. The stock is currently trading at all-time lows (66 cents a share) and bankruptcy has been a logical conclusion should another company not step up and buy them in the near future. Something was going to happen sooner or later and the latest reports certainly paint a dire picture.

According to various sources THQ has now canceled all projects slated for 2014 (predictably they have since issued a denial) and beyond in anticipation of a potential sale and are in the process of returning licenses they currently hold. To be clear there are no specific indications that THQ has backed their way out of the UFC and WWE licenses at this time – and next month’s UFC Undisputed 3 will definitely not be affected by any of this – but clearly there is a sense that THQ knows they aren’t going to be around for the long haul. Currently the company holds exclusives with both the UFC and WWE through 2018.

It’s unfortunately a plausible scenario that the licenses are vacated before the original deals come to completion. THQ doesn’t make for an especially attractive acquisition even for the relatively cheap price that the company could be had for. Regardless of whether they are eventually bought out or simply go bankrupt expect control of the UFC and WWE licenses to return to Dana White and Vince McMahon. They would not become property of say, EA or Activision, if they were to buy THQ. White and McMahon would then have the ability to sell their respective licenses to whomever they please.

Where would they end up going? Don’t expect White to consider EA Sports even if they offered the most cash and best development situation – he’s been vocal for years that he wants nothing to do with them after feeling they disrespected the sport in a previous negotiation. WWE on the other hand wouldn’t be a surprise to end up at the publisher. There are any number of possibilities though and it’s probably too early to speculate beyond that as situation will need to be monitored in all new developments going forward.

If THQ goes up for sell effectively backing out of their UFC and WWE franchises, there are only 2 companies that really could oversee these games justice with financial backing.

1) 2k sports : Although they haven't effectively done well in the combat sports arena (Don King Boxing) Their talking of dumping the NHL series. With just MLB and NBA they'd need another franchise to pick up in order to stay viable. Enter UFC

2) EA Sports : Let's face it, Dana knows how much money is to be made in video games. He puts his foot in his mouth any other time, so why not do it for the kingpin of Sports gaming? EA MMA was a gem of a game on some faucets, so imagine if they had the backing of UFC, the time and money of licensing, and a good building block. Build the engine from scratch and you'd have all of us drooling. Theres only one problem to that. What happens when EA has no competition? You get Madden and NCAA, rehashing of a game year and year out with very little improvements. Don't get me wrong, sometimes, when the formula is working they looking awesome, but thats IF and WHEN they hit the nail on the head.

WWE will be hardpressed to find a suitor, but someone would pick it up..Man if this true I'd hate to see after sale support of UFC 3. We thought last installment was bad...

More bad news for THQ

http://www.gametrailers.com/side-mission/2012/02/01/report-thq-to-layoff-170-today/

Hopefully the 170 aren't unemployed for long and find new jobs at other companies.

I'm hoping that THQ put a great deal of effort on UFC3 considering UFC 2009 saved them from bankruptcy when it came out so you would think UFC would be their flagship game with their top people working on it.

Can UFC 3 do what UFC2009 did? Guess we'll find out by the end of the month.

I personally think the game will sell more then 2010 but not as much as 2009 unless it's really, really, really good cause in the age of the internet and forums, word of mouth is more important then ever for videogame sales.

CEO takes a 50% pay cut.

At least this CEO isn't a complete douche like others.

Kotaku has an interesting article on why THQ is having problems

http://kotaku.com/5881479/how-thq-went-from-bad-to-very-bad

Blood Sports. THQ has a lot of money tied up in the licensing and development of games based on professional wrestling and UFC mixed martial arts. So much so that the licenses for both the WWE and UFC cost almost as much (with the UFC deal's dollar terms unknown, maybe more) than THQ is currently worth. The former games are...OK, the latter pretty damn good. But they've over-invested in a market that's always going to be a niche one, meaning the chances to make a ton of money, ala EA Sports, were always slim.

I knew that the REAL reason Dana picked THQ was that they simply had a better bid for the license. No one turns down a multi-million dollar deal just cause some company exec says something stupid like "mma isn't a sport" which later on turned out that he made that up(EA already having Randy, Arlovski, and Sylvia signed on to do an MMA game when Dana had this meeting).

If THQ does go under, I'm hoping that Zuffa doesn't try this strategy again by selling off their brand to a low tier publisher just to make some more money (could you imagine sega making this... oh the horror). Then again according to this article most companies have more common sense then to purchase a license that's worth more then the company itself.

I wonder if the UFC will do something financially to keep them afloat.

Randy didn't sign his likeness to THQ, Arlovski was not in the UFC at the time he signed on and Sylvia was released as a direct result of signing onto EA MMA

I really doubt Zuffa(and who ever owns WWE) will do anything to help THQ, they'll just move on to another company to make their games.

Funny, I was under the impression that most fighters were signed around the time Affliction was a league.
